Viceroy in Maine!

 A viceroy is a regal official who represents a monarch!  How appropriate a name for this Viceroy (Limenitis archippus) which is a mimic of the Monarch (Danaus plexippus).

Seen on a cool early morning at the edge of our meadow here in Maine.  The only one I've seen this summer....hope there will be more.

Mourning Cloak

 The Mourning Cloak (Nymphalis antiopa) is a beautiful woodland species and member of the Nymphalidae family.  With one brood in June-July it is likely found in sunny forest clearings and edges.

 The summer brood, after heavy feeding, estivates until fall....with some migrating south.  These photos were taken in the Redmond Brook Preserve in Harrington, Maine.

 Arctic Skipper (Carterocephalus palaemon).  Small boreal skipper with only one brood in late spring-early summer.  Distinctive pattern, unlike any simililar species in range.

 Eastern Tiger Swallowtail (Papilio glaucus) or maybe a Canadian Tiger Swallowtail (P. canadensis).  Very hard to distinguish between the two.
