Spring Wildflowers at Myakka

Late February is early spring here in south Florida.  We enjoyed an afternoon hike in Myakka River State Park and saw some early wildflowers mixed among the browns of winter.

We hiked along the Fox Road Trail...through hammock and dry prairie.

Some winter colors and brown seedpods persist into the spring.

A beautiful part of the trail through a Slash Pine Hammock.

We weren't the only ones who enjoyed the trail or the beautiful day.

Out onto the dry prairie.

A Live Oak Hammock

Plenty of acorns for Scrub Jays and critters.

The Long Leaf Pines are always green, but the new needles are a much paler shade.

Another great day afield here in Gulf Coast Florida.

Gator Roulette!

Here are some tourists paddling up to an alligator almost as big as their canoe.  Very, very imprudent.  This was taken at Myakka River State Park in Sarasota, Florida.  The gator was about 12 feet long and the canoeists paddled up to take photos.  I wonder if they also play Russian Roulette?

Cloudless Sulfur (Phoebis sennae)
We find this species the most common in our backyard here in Gulf Coast Florida.

Ripley Neck in Downeast Maine.

Ripley Neck is one of many peninsulas in Downeast Maine.  It is between the Harrington and Pleasant Rivers and is part of Harrington, Maine.  Our summer home, Wabi Sabi Farm, is there and I wanted to share some of the area's beauty.

Here is a rather tattered Monarch, taken late in the season.
