The Rookery: Venice, Florida

Our recent visit to the Venice Area Audubon Society's Rookery Park
Recent vegetation pruning left the small park unsightly, but we saw a large flock of
Black Bellied Whisling Ducks (Dendrocygna autumnalis).

Several nesting pairs of Great Blue Herons (Ardea herodias).

Nesting behavior.

Green Heron (Buterides virescens).

Anhinga (Anhinga anhinga).

Laughing Gulls (Larus atricilla) on a nearby fence. Adult, non-breeding plumage.

The resident 4 foot long American Alligator (Alligator mississipiensis).

Mottled Ducks (Anes fulvigula).

A short drive home from this small, but nice park.....to another beautiful Florida sunset!

  1. Beautiful. Thanks for posting your pictures. I was at the Rookery this morning and enjoyed the young birds with their protective adults, wishing I had a camera good enough to do them justice. I enjoyed looking at them through my binoculars. I'm including a link to your blog from mine: http://heartfulart.blogspot.com/
